The Student Conservation Association of Charlestown, NH, selected MacMillin as Construction Manager for their new green building. Designed by Haynes and Garthwaite Architects, the building gets back to green basics with proper solar orientation for maximized daylighting and winter solar gain. Extended eaves provide shade for high summer heat. The building is heated by a wood pellet boiler and features heat recovery units throughout the building that combine interior air with exterior air to maximize heating and cooling and to bring fresh air into the building. A minimum of 1/3 of the building's electricity will be supplied by 77,000 photo-voltaic cells on the roof mounted solar array. The unassuming barn-style building has many hidden smart features to minimize energy use and maximize occupant health.
