Objective:
Build two new residence halls at Keene State College (KSC) and determine if one or both should be LEED certified, and if so, at which level?
Methodology:
KSC engaged a multi-disciplinary team to develop a concept for the residence halls to analyze design techniques and the costs and benefits of the LEED rating system. The team kicked off the process with a LEED training session for everyone involved, and continues with biweekly assessment meetings.
MacMillin’s Role:
As the Construction Manager, MacMillin’s team is a supporting resource for the designers as they develop final plans and specifications. MacMillin’s estimating department is heavily involved in evaluating alternative design costs. Using recent experience and subcontractor resources, MacMillin offers suggestions for the integration of construction methods and materials consistent with LEED initiatives.
Future:
The team has registered Pondside III for Silver LEED certification upon completion in 2007. Butler Court incorporates many of the LEED design techniques, but will not register. The USGBC has an initiative under way for LEED Campus certification program. KSC’s design choices have placed it one step closer to achieving this certification, if it wishes, in the future.
