The renovation to the NICU, LDR and maternity wings required multiple phases and a "pod-by-pod" approach to completely segregate the construction activity from patients, visitors and staff. MacMillin's staff had to respond immediately to emergencies, ceasing all activity and potential movement or noise that could affect a patient's critical care.

The Natal Intensive Care Unit, Maternity and Labor Delivery and Recovery wings were renovated through a phased schedule allowing the hospital to remain operational. Construction containment and infection control kept the hospital fully operational.
Unique features of the renovation include custom headboards, integrated audio, visual and thermal monitors and a comfortable fully-equipped family room for guests. The hospital has also used the new design to coordinate and consolidate staff across three wings, resulting in a more efficient workforce.
