The new public library in West Lebanon, NH was built to achieve LEED Gold certification. The main structure is structural steel, metal decking and Glue-Laminated structural members. The building has sophisticated sensors that sense daylight, and adjust the lighting and shades used in the building. Solar gain in the winter months helps to heat the building. There is a geothermal system and a wood pellet boiler which work with the sensors to optimize the energy used for heating and cooling. The building’s envelope is extremely tight, so heating and cooling needs are reduced significantly. Non-toxic (low-emitting) materials such as paints and sealants, carpets and wood were used throughout the building. MacMillin created and managed the indoor air quality plan, the pollution prevention plan and the construction waste diversion plans.
